Death toll in Uttara building fire hits six

The death toll rose to six after a fire broke out at a residential building in the capital’s Uttara area early on Friday.

The fire, which broke out on the second floor at a seven-storey building in Uttara Sector No. 11, was reported around 7:50 AM on Friday. On information, two firefighting units rushed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control at around 8:25 AM, according to the Fire Service official Talha Bin Jasim.

Firefighters later rescued 13 people from the building and took them to the Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in Uttara, where the doctor on duty declared six of them dead so far.

Of the deceased, two were women, and one was a man. Three members of a family died as well. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Uttara West Police Station Kazi Mohammad Rafiq Ahmed, confirmed the death toll at around 1pm.

The deceased have been identified as Rabbi, 38, Haris, 52, and Rahab, 17, who passed away at the Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital.

Additionally, a woman named Afroza died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while another victim, Rodela Akter, breathed her last at Lubana General Hospital.

The youngest victim was identified as two-and-a-half-year-old Risan, who died at Uttara Specialized Hospital.

The fire was fully extinguished by 10 AM. The cause of the fire, however, could not be confirmed immediately.
