Police have arrested an alleged top terrorist from Chittagong, along with four of his associates in separate operations.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Saiful Islam, alias Burma Saiful; Shihab Uddin; Md Riad Hossain; and Md Mir Hossain, alias Lincon.
CMP Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Muhammad Faisal Ahmed confirmed the arrest during a press briefing at the Dampara Police Commissioner's Office on Wednesday afternoon.
Saiful faces 34 cases, Shihab 6 cases, and both Riad and Mir have 5 cases each registered against them.
According to the police, on January 12, acting on secret information, Burma Saiful and Shihab Uddin were arrested during a raid in the capital’s Gulshan police station area.
The duo were involved in the controversial gold bar looting at Aturar Depot under Panchlaish police station.
Following their arrest, authorities recovered several gold bars and a Yamaha R-15 motorcycle used in the crime.
In a separate operation on January 13, Panchlaish Model Police Station arrested two close associates of Burma Saiful, Riad Hossain and Mir Hossain, alias Lincon, in the Hillview area.
Police say the arrests are part of ongoing efforts to dismantle organised criminal and terrorist networks operating in Chattogram.
