A court in Cox’s Bazar has denied bail to eight accused in the murder case of Ukhiya’s prominent local leader Kamal Hossain and ordered their immediate imprisonment.
Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahim delivered the verdict following a hearing on Wednesday (January 14).
The accused are Abdur Rahim, Tofail Ahmed, Zuhur Ahmed Chowdhury, Shariful Haque Sagor, Zahir Ahmed, Nurul Bashar, Mohammad Ridwan and Shariful Haque Nahid. All reside in Monkhali area under Jalia Palong union in Ukhiya upazila.
According to court sources, all eight accused were present and had applied for bail, which the court rejected, directing that they be sent directly to jail.
The victim’s brother and complainant, Sahab Uddin, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision.
“My brother was brutally and premeditatedly murdered. We have been waiting for justice for a long time. Today’s order, sending the accused to jail without bail, strengthens our faith in the rule of law. We want the killers to receive the maximum punishment,” he said.
Kamal Hossain, a former organising secretary of Upazila Jubo League and a member of Ward 9, Jalia Palong Union, was found dead on July 8 last year near a pond beside his home in Monkhali, Jalia Palong.
According to family, he went to a pharmacy the night before and his phone was unreachable after 11 PM. His body was recovered by police the next day around 11 AM.
On July 10, Sahab Uddin filed a murder case at Ukhiya police station, naming eight individuals and leaving six others unidentified.
Previously, the accused had obtained interim bail from the High Court and were moving freely, causing local unrest. The family said two other relatives of Kamal Hossain had also been victims of violent attacks in the past.
