A Chattogram court has sentenced 10 accused to life imprisonment in the murder case of police constable Abdul Qayyum.
Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Mizanur Rahman announced the verdict on Monday.
The convicted accuseds are Md. Javed, Nurul Alam, Sumon Mollah, Harun Or Rashid, Tapan Chandra Sarkar, Mintu Das, Arcal alias Russell, Faruk alias Bullet Faruk, Md. Sohel and Md. Babul.
The deceased, Abdul Qayyum, 22, was a resident of Sandwip upazila of Chittagong. He joined the police as a constable on October 6, 2012.
Court bench assistant Mohammad Shahed said that since the charges were proven, each accused has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
At the same time, each of them was fined Tk 25,000 and another six months in prison in default. The court ordered the payment of Tk 2.5 lakh of the fine received from the accused to the family of the deceased policeman.
Five of the convicts were present in court, and the remaining five are absconding.
According to the case documents, on November 3, 2013, Constable Abdul Qayyum was stabbed to death while preventing a robbery near the DIG bungalow in the Tiger Pass Ambagan area of Khulshi Police Station in Chittagong City.
Three policemen were injured in the incident. The police filed a case with Khulshi Police Station accusing 19 people in the incident. After the investigation, the police accused 10 people and submitted a charge sheet.
