A National Citizen Party leader in Gazipur has allegedly survived a brazen attack when gunmen opened fire and stole his motorcycle.
The assailants, posing as buyers, lured Habib Chowdhury into a trap, firing shots that missed him as they fled with the vehicle.
The incident occurred around noon on Thursday. Police are on the hunt for the suspects.
Police say Habib had posted an online advertisement to sell his motorcycle.
On Thursday morning, two people came to inspect the vehicle and spent about "an hour" examining it.
At one stage, one of the men started the motorcycle, while the other approached Habib, pulled out a firearm and opened fire, according to police.
Habib chased after the motorcycle, and another shot was reportedly fired at him. The bullets did not hit him.
"One of them got on the motorcycle, saying he wanted to test it, while the other fired at me. Fortunately, I survived. They fled with the motorcycle," Habib said.
NCP's Joint Chief Coordinator (north) and the party's candidate for Gazipur-2 constituency Ali Naser Khan said Habib was "deliberately" targeted.
"They set a trap and shot at July activist Habib Chowdhury. If he had been hit, he would have become a martyr like Hadi," he said.
"Those who took part in the July mass uprising are not safe. The state is failing to ensure their security, and political groups are turning this into a killing spree."
Ali demanded the arrest of those involved within 12 hours and exemplary punishment.
Bason Police chief Harunur Rashid said police operations are under way to identify those involved. Legal action will be taken once a written complaint is filed.
A team from the Gazipur Metropolitan Police visited the scene after receiving information about the gunfire and claims to have recovered a spent bullet casing. Operations are under way to arrest the suspects. "bdnews24
