A meeting on the "Energy and Power Sector Master Plan 2026-2050" was held at the State Guest House Jamuna on Wednesday, chaired by Chief Adviser of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus.
During the meeting Chief Adviser directed the establishment of a separate institution for research on electricity and energy.
During the meeting, several recommendations were presented on power generation, transmission, supply, environmental and economic sustainability, and institutional reforms. The plan also set the goal of making the primary energy sector safer, more efficient, less import-dependent, and financially sustainable by 2050.
Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin, Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, and senior officials of the ministries concerned attended the meeting. It may be noted that Major General SM Zia-ul-Azim, NDC, Chairman of the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board was present at the meeting, says a press release.
The objective of the master plan is to ensure reliable, affordable, and sustainable primary energy and electricity for all people of Bangladesh by optimising the use of domestic resources, ensuring energy security, enhancing efficiency, and promoting environmental responsibility.
During the meeting, policy gaps in the previous three master plans were identified and briefly reviewed. Discussions were held on implementing the new master plan in three phases- Phase-I (2026-2030), Phase-II (2030-2040), and Phase-III (2040-2050). The Chief Adviser thanked all concerned for presenting a detailed overview of the electricity and energy sector. He said, "This is the lifeline of Bangladesh's economy. If it is strong, the economy will stand firm. This sector affects the lives of every citizen of the country."
