The Chief Adviser’s Press Wing on Tuesday said that communal motives played no role in the killing of a Hindu man in Jashore, dismissing speculation that the incident was linked to either religion or journalism.
Chief Adviser’s Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahammad made the remarks at a press briefing at Foreign Service Academy, stating that the victim’s profession as a journalist was also not a factor in the killing.
The victim, Rana Pratap Bairagi, 38, was shot dead by unidentified assailants following a brief altercation at Kopalia Bazar of Manirampur upazila in Jashore district on Monday evening. He owned an ice factory at the bazar and also worked as a journalist.
According to Foyez Ahammad, Rana had previously been accused in a murder case and was involved in extremist political activities.
“Police believe the killing was the result of factional rivalry,” he said.
He added that investigations into the incident are ongoing, but so far law enforcement agencies have found no evidence linking the murder to religious identity or journalistic activities.
