JASHORE, Jan 2: Nomination papers of eight candidates, including former BNP lawmaker Mofiqul Hasan Tripti and Jamaat-e-Islami nominee Dr. Mosleh Uddin Farid, have been cancelled in two constituencies of Jashore following scrutiny ahead of the 13th parliamentary election.
The decision was announced on Thursday by Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Mohammad Ashek Hasan after the official verification process.
The scrutiny took place at the Jashore DC office in the morning, covering Jashore-1 (Sharsha) and Jashore-2 (Jhikargachha-Chowgachha).
In Jashore-1, three out of seven candidates were disqualified. Tripti's nomination was rejected as he failed to submit the BNP's official endorsement. Independent candidate Abul Hasan Zahir, President of Sharsha BNP, lost his bid due to errors in voter signatures, while another independent, Shahjahan Ali Goldar, was also disqualified on similar grounds.
Valid candidates in Jashore-1 include BNP's Nuruzzaman Liton, Jahangir Alam Chanchal of Jatiya Party (JaPa), Jamaat's Muhammad Azizur Rahman, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB)'s Boktiar Rahman.
In Jashore-2, five of ten candidates were disqualified. Jamaat nominee Dr. Farid was rejected over unresolved bank loan (credit card) issues. BNP's Mohammad Ishaq and Zohurul Islam failed to submit party endorsements, while independent candidate Mehedi Hasan's papers contained voter data errors. Another BNP-aligned contender, Shamsul Haque, was disqualified for incomplete signature and tax identification details. JaPa's Firoz Shah also lost his candidacy due to outdated TIN and loan records.
The valid contenders in Jashore-2 are BNP's Sabira Sultana, IAB's Idris Ali, BASAD's Imran Khan, and AB Party's Ripon Mahmud.
Returning Officer Ashek Hasan told reporters that scrutiny of nominations for Jashore-1 and Jashore-2 has been completed, while the remaining constituencies will be examined in phases. Verification for all six constituencies in the district is expected to conclude by January 4. He added that the eight disqualified candidates retain the right to appeal under electoral rules.
According to the district election office, a total of 46 nomination papers were submitted across Jashore's six constituencies.
Among them are 10 BNP candidates, 6 from Jamaat, 10 independents, 6 from IAB, and 6 from JaPa. Other parties such as BNF, BASAD, JAGPA, CPB, Khelafat Majlis, Minority Janata Party, and AB Party also fielded candidates.
Earlier, 71 aspirants had collected nomination forms in the district.
