The government has cancelled the appointments of one Deputy Attorney General and three Assistant Attorney Generals, issuing formal notifications relieving them of their duties with immediate effect. The Deputy Attorney General whose appointment has been revoked is Zulfikar Alam Shimul, while the Assistant Attorney Generals affected are Ibrahim Khalil, Md Ayub Ali and Md Montu Alam.
Separate notifications were issued on Monday by the Solicitor's Office under the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, cancelling the appointments by order of the President. The notifications stated that the decisions were taken "in the public interest" and that the concerned law officers have been released from their respective responsibilities.
According to the notifications, "the appointment orders are hereby cancelled in the public interest and the concerned officers are relieved of their duties," adding that the orders "will come into effect immediately."
Deputy Attorney Generals and Assistant Attorney Generals serve as state law officers and represent the government in cases before the Appellate Division and the High Court Division of the Supreme Court. The latest move results in the immediate cessation of their authority to conduct cases on behalf of the state at the apex court level.
