A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent 11 individuals to jail in two separate cases filed over attacks, arson, and looting at the offices of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam passed the order following a hearing, with state counsels Shamsuddoha Sumon and Md Kaiyum Hossain Nayan confirming the matter.
The nine accused who landed in jail over the attack on The Daily Star office are Mohammad Mainul Islam, 22, Julfikar Ali Sourav, 22, Md Almas Ali, 29, Jubair Hossain, 21, Aynul Haque Kashemi, 30, Abdul Rahman Palash, 30, Md Jannatul Naeem, 21, Qari Muazbin Abdur Rahman, 34, and Md Faisal Ahmed, 24.
Meanwhile, two other accused who landed in jail over the attack on the Prothom Alo office are Yasin, 39, and Md Hashem, 24.
During the hearing, defence lawyers sought bail for several accused, arguing that individuals, including a journalist, a shopkeeper, or a person who was merely passing through the area and had simply shared a photo on Facebook, were arrested on mere suspicion.
According to a Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) press release issued on Tuesday, nine of the accused were arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) during raids at various locations across the city on Monday, while two others were apprehended by Tejgaon police during the same period.
