Religious Affairs Adviser Dr AFM Khalid Hossain on Sunday condemned acts of mob justice, calling them a serious impediment to good governance in the country.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, he described taking the law into one’s own hands as “extremely condemnable and heinous” and stressed that such actions will not be tolerated.

He specifically mentioned the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a garment worker in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh, whose body was reportedly set on fire after being beaten by a mob over alleged blasphemy.

Dr Khalid said he had communicated with the Home Affairs Adviser to ensure swift action against those responsible.

The adviser claimed that law and order is now “fully under control,” adding that while isolated violent incidents still occur, authorities are confident that the upcoming elections can be held on time in a free, fair, inclusive, and festive environment.

Addressing recent arson attacks on two newspapers—The Daily Prothom Alo and The Daily Star—Dr Khalid acknowledged the challenges of preemptively securing all institutions but confirmed that intelligence has identified suspects, and measures have been taken to apprehend them. On the attack on Chhayanaut, he said the government condemns any form of arson or violence against recognized institutions and is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

When questioned about possible intelligence failures, he refrained from labeling the incidents as such, emphasizing the complexities of anticipating coordinated attacks.

Dr Khalid also noted allegations of incitement from abroad, highlighting that platforms like Meta and YouTube operate beyond the government’s direct control, and that similar inflammatory content is posted regularly within Bangladesh.

He reiterated that maintaining law and order and preventing acts of mob violence remain top priorities for the government in ensuring a secure environment for all citizens.
