Despite the recession in the country's stock market, the number of investors continues to increase. In December this year, an average of 159 beneficiary owner (BO) accounts were added on each working day.
However, while overall BO accounts have risen, the number of BO accounts held by foreign and expatriate investors has declined, indicating that their exit from the stock market has not stopped.
The number of foreign and expatriate investors has been steadily decreasing since November 2023, and this trend is likely to continue this month as well.
Foreigners leaving Bangladeshi stock market started from November 2023. On October 29, 2023, there were 55,512 BO accounts in the names of foreign and expatriate investors. But after October 29, 2023, the number of BO accounts in the name of foreign and expatriate investors in the country's stock market has decreased by 11,967.
In the 11 working days of this December, the BO accounts of foreigners and Bangladeshi expatriates have decreased by 14 every day. On the contrary, the overall BO accounts have increased by 1,752.
The Central Depository, Bangladesh Limited (CDBL) is responsible for maintaining BO account information. According to CDBL information, currently (as of December 16) the number of BO accounts of investors in the market stood at 1,638,721; which was 1,636,969 on December 1.
As a result, the number of BO accounts in the stock market has increased by 1,752 this month. So far, this month 11 working days have passed, the number of BO accounts has increased by 159 on an average per working day.
Meanwhile, currently there are 43,545 BO accounts in the names of foreign and expatriate investors. On December 1, there were 43,559 BO accounts in the names of foreign and expatriate investors. That is, the number of BO accounts of foreign and expatriate investors has decreased by 14 this month.
Although foreigners and expatriates have left the country's stock market, the number of local investors is increasing. According to CDBL data, there are currently 1,577,404 BO accounts in the name of domestic investors, which was 1,575,662 on December 1. That is, the BO accounts of local investors have increased by 1,742 this month.
Although the number of investors in the stock market has increased slightly, a large number of investors have left the stock market before. At the beginning of 2024, the BO accounts of investors in the stock market were 1,773,551. And currently, there are 1,638,721 BO accounts. That is, from the beginning of 2024 to now, BO accounts have decreased by 134,830.
Meanwhile, among the investors currently in the stock market, there are 1,232,404 BO accounts in the name of male investors. Last December 1, this number was 1,230,955. That is, the accounts of male investors have increased by 1,449 this month.
On the other hand, the BO accounts of female investors currently stand at 3,88,545. Last December 1, this number was 3,88,266. As a result, the BO accounts of female investors have increased by 279 in the last month.
Along with female and male investors, the BO accounts of companies have also increased this month. Currently, there are 17,772 company BO accounts. Last December 1, this number was 17,748. As a result, the company BO accounts have increased by 24 in one month.
Currently, among the BO accounts held by investors, 1,181,278 are in single names, which was 1,179,715 on December 1. This means that the number of BO accounts held in single names has increased by 1,563 this month.
On the other hand, investors have 4,39,671 BO accounts held in joint names. On December 1, the number of joint BO accounts held was 4,39,506. This means that the number of joint BO accounts held in joint names has increased by 165 this month.
