Today, 14th December, the nation is observing Martyred Intellectuals Day with deep sorrow and reverence, remembering the country's finest sons who were systematically eliminated from the beginning of the Liberation War until the eve of final victory in 1971. The day serves as a solemn reminder of one of the most heinous crimes committed during the war, aimed at crippling the intellectual foundation of the emerging nation.

On December 14, 1971, just two days before victory, the Pakistani occupation army, in collusion with local collaborators Razakar, Al Badr, and Al Shams, abducted leading academicians, researchers, physicians, engineers, journalists, poets, and writers from their homes. Blindfolded, tortured, and brutally murdered, they were targeted in a premeditated attempt to demoralise an independent Bangladesh on the threshold of sovereignty. Their bodies were later recovered from mass graves at sites including Mirpur and Rayerbazar in Dhaka. Historical records indicate the objective was to ensure that "the Bengali nation could not stand tall in the world as an independent sovereign state."

A compilation published in 1972, based on national newspapers and an investigative article by journalist Nicholas Tomlin in Newsweek, revealed that at least 1,070 intellectuals were martyred. Preparations for the killings reportedly began on December 10, with the principal executions carried out on December 14. Major General Rao Farman Ali, acting on behalf of the Pakistani military junta, was identified as the chief architect of the massacre, and approximately 942 killing sites have been documented across the country.

Among the martyred intellectuals were Professor Munir Chowdhury, Dr Alim Chowdhury, Professor Muniruzzaman, Dr Fazle Rabbi, Siraj Uddin Hossain, Shahidullah Kaiser, Professor GC Deb, Jyotirmoy Guha Thakurta, Professor Santosh Bhattacharya, Mofazzal Haider Chowdhury, and journalists Khandaker Abu Taher, Nizamuddin Ahmed, SA Mannan Ladu Bhai, ANM Golam Mostafa, Syed Nazmul Haque, and Selina Parveen, alongside many others.

Martyred Intellectuals Day 2025 is being observed nationwide with state-level solemnity and extensive programmes by political parties, professional bodies, and cultural organisations. Activities include wreath-laying at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Memorial, paying homage at Rayerbazar killing field, day-long discussions, silent processions, and prayer gatherings seeking blessings for the departed souls.
