Wildlife photographers, birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts protest on Friday against the indiscriminate hunting of birds in Bangladesh, highlighting the alarming threat it poses to the country’s biodiversity, environment and ecosystem.
The event, held at New Vision Eco City near Kalatia, included a photowalk, birdwatching session and a local awareness programme.
Participants from various backgrounds came together to raise awareness among local communities about the devastating impact of rampant bird hunting.
During the programme, attendees observed over 50 species of birds, including Black Bittern, Black-crowned Night Heron, Cormorants, various warblers, Baya Weavers, Scaly-breasted Munia, Chestnut Munia, and Brahminy Kite.
Organisers emphasised that no birds are safe from hunters anymore, and if the situation is alarming in Dhaka, it is far more severe in remote regions.
Participants called for urgent measures, including public awareness campaigns, strict law enforcement, community involvement, and national resistance to protect birds and safeguard the environment for future generations.
“Bird hunting is not just a threat to wildlife; it endangers our ecosystem and the natural heritage we leave behind,” an organiser said. “Immediate and effective action is needed to stop this destructive practice.”
