BNP has declared a nationwide protest for Saturday, calling for the immediate arrest of those involved in the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho and a potential independent candidate for Dhaka-8.
The announcement came from the party’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi during a programme titled “Plan to Build the Nation” held at Krishibid Institute in the capital on Friday afternoon.
Rizvi said that the attack on Hadi was a “planned conspiracy” aimed at silencing political voices ahead of the election. “Miscreants shot Osman Hadi. This is part of a deliberate plot. We demand an urgent investigation into the shooting and immediate arrest of those responsible,” he said.
He added that BNP, along with all its wings and affiliated organisations, will hold protest rallies and demonstrations across Dhaka and the rest of the country on Saturday.
The party also gave a statement in connection with the incident. The statement further
alleged that a vested quarter in the country is engaged in a malicious
attempt to ‘fish in troubled waters’ through terrorist acts.
The party
referred to this group, which seeks to gain political advantage by
systematically creating fear and panic in society, as a vicious
terrorist ring serving base political interests, it said.
“The
people must always be vigilant against the subversive acts of the
saboteurs. Such incidents are being orchestrated to block the path of
democracy and obstruct the national election. Therefore, there is no
alternative but to suppress these subversive terrorists with an iron
hand,” added the statement.
The BNP called upon people of all
classes and professions, irrespective of their party affiliation or
opinion, to unite and protect democracy and people’s right to vote.
BNP
strongly demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the
attackers and wished a quick recovery for the critically injured Sharif
Osman Hadi.
Sharif Osman Hadi was shot in Dhaka’s Paltan area this afternoon. He was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
