Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed has said that the number of millionaire bank account holders in the country may have increased as people are depositing money they had kept hidden at home for a long time.

He made this comment in response to a question from reporters at the end of a meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Government Procurement at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

According to a report published by Bangladesh Bank on Sunday, the number of millionaire accounts in the country's banking sector is increasing. The number increased by 5,974 in the June quarter compared to March quarter of this year.

The number of millionaire accounts increased by 734 in three months from June to September.

In view of this, the finance advisor was asked by reporters - what is the reason for the increase in the number of millionaire accounts in banks in the current situation?

The financial advisor said it may be because people have been hiding money inside their homes for a long time and are now depositing it in the bank accounts.

Meanwhile, the latest report of Bangladesh Bank shows the total number of accounts in the banking sector at the end of June was 169,02671. At the end of September, it increased to 174,596,700. That means 55,94,029 new accounts were opened in three months.

At the same time, deposits in banks also increased slightly. At the end of June, the amount of deposits was Tk 19,96,583 crore. At the end of September, it stood at Tk 20,31,119 crore. As a result, deposits increased by Tk 34,536 crore in three months.

According to central bank, the number of accounts holding more than a crore taka at the end of the June quarter was 1,27,336. At the end of the September quarter, it increased to 1,28,070. That means the number of millionaire accounts increased by 734 in three months. Earlier, the number was 1,21,362 at the end of March.
