National women’s football team star Ritu Porna Chakma was awarded the prestigious Begum Rokeya Padak by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday, adding another major accolade to her growing list of achievements.
Sharing her feelings on social media, Ritu Porna described the award as deeply meaningful.
“Every award is a matter of pride and respect. Earlier this year, I received the Ekushey Padak as part of the team, which was a great honour. Now, receiving the Begum Rokeya Padak individually makes it even more special for me,” she said.
She added, “Every athlete fights for the nation, and all players overcome hardship. Receiving an award named after such an inspiring figure increases my sense of responsibility toward my country and society. This honour will inspire me to give even more.”
The Begum Rokeya Padak is presented annually by the government and has rarely been awarded to someone from the sports arena.
Last year, legendary chess player Rani Hamid received it, while this year it went to Ritu Porna. She hopes this recognition will encourage more women athletes in the future.
“Athletes represent the country on international stages. When people see a woman athlete succeed, it inspires others to take up sports or pursue their goals. There are many talented women athletes in our country. If they receive this award in the future, they too will feel encouraged and motivated,” Ritu Porna said.
