International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on Monday exonerated BNP leader Fazlur Rahman from a contempt charge over remarks he made about the tribunal during a recent television talk show.

The decision came after Fazlur appeared before the tribunal and offered an unconditional apology.

The three-member bench, headed by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mazumder, heard submissions from Fazlur's counsel, Advocate Ruhul Quddus Kazal, who emphasised his client's deep remorse and apology.

Prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim presented the case, citing Fazlur's comments on the talk show where he reportedly stated that he did not accept the tribunal.

Fazlur spoke from the podium, saying, "You are respected after God. I made a slip of the tongue. I am 78 years old, and this is the first mistake I have made. I offer my unconditional apology." The tribunal cautioned him, stating, "You have liberty, but you must remain within limits," and stressed that ICT is not a court meant for any particular group or period, noting that crimes against humanity may occur at any time.
