Police recovered the throat-slit bodies of a freedom fighter and his wife from Taragong upazila in Rangpur district on Sunday morning.

The deceased were identified as Jogesh Chandra Roy, 75, and his wife, Subarna Roy, 60, residents of North Rahimapur under Kursha union in the upazila. Jogesh Chandra Roy was a respected and popular teacher and a frontline fighter during the Liberation War.

According to locals, neighbours, unable to get a response after knocking on their door at around 7:30 AM, climbed into the house and discovered the couple's bloodied bodies and informed police.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Monabber Hossain expressed his sorrow and said that the mystery of this crime will be solved very soon.

Local freedom fighter commander Ali Hossain expressed outrage, saying, “It is unacceptable for a heroic freedom fighterto be killed in this manner. The perpetrators must be identified within 24 hours or we will take strict action.”

Confirming the incident, Taraganj Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Abu Saiyum said that the couples may have been killed by hitting their heads.

A forensic team has been notified and additional police personnel have been deployed in the area, added the SI.
