Students of seven government colleges in Dhaka have vowed to intensify their protests until the government issues the final ordinance for the newly proposed Dhaka Central University (DCU).
The students said that despite long-standing demands, no progress from Education Ministry has been made, leaving over 150,000 students facing identity crises and academic uncertainty.
On Sunday evening, the students announced their plan in front of Education Ministry in Dhaka, stating that they will continue street blockades, sit-ins and encirclement actions until their demands are met.
They warned that if the final ordinance is not issued, they will escalate their protests, including road blockades, on Monday.
Earlier in the day, the students attempted to besiege Education Ministry at 1:00 PM but were stopped by police.
They later blocked the road in front of the ministry, disrupting traffic along Mazar Road, the area in front of the Secretariat and nearby streets.
The students’ sole demand is the immediate issuance of the final ordinance for Dhaka Central University.
Previously, on November 12, Education Ministry’s Public Relations Division stated that a policy decision had been made to establish a new public university by merging the seven colleges under the name “Dhaka Central University,” urging students to remain responsible and avoid spreading rumours.
