NILPHAMARI, Dec 7: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Saturday distributed corrugated tin sheets to 90 families affected by a recent tornado in Kishoreganj Upazila of the district.
The assistance was provided by the upazila unit of the party at a programme held in Natun Teparhat area of Garagram Union.
ATM Azharul Islam, Nayeb-e-Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, attended the event as the chief guest and handed over the tin sheets to the affected families.
Addressing the gathering, Azharul Islam said that if Jamaat secures a majority in the upcoming national election, the party intends to run the state on Islamic principles. He claimed that the country's existing laws and constitution are "man-made" and not fully aligned with Islamic values. Despite 54 years under secularism, nationalism, or socialism, he said, people's fortunes had not improved.
"We have seen the 'Boat', the 'Sheaf of Paddy', and the 'Plough'. These symbols changed the fate of their leaders, not the fate of the people," he said. "If Jamaat enters parliament with a majority, it will work for the welfare of all-Muslim or non-Muslim, men or women-irrespective of religion or background. The state will be governed on the basis of the Qur'an and Sunnah."
He added that Jamaat does not seek power alone. "We want to establish people's governance with the people. Eight like-minded Islamic parties are working to contest the next election under a single electoral symbol. If successful, an Islamic government will be formed through the upcoming elections, Inshallah," he said.
Azharul Islam further remarked that the nation had long been divided into so-called pro-liberation and anti-liberation groups. "A country cannot move forward by dividing its citizens," he said, urging all to work together for national development. He also claimed that no attacks or vandalism took place during Durga Puja this year and alleged that those responsible for previous incidents had "fled the country."
Kishoreganj Upazila Jamaat Ameer Abdur Rashid Shah presided over the programme, conducted by Secretary Ferdous Alam. Special guests included Muhammad Abdur Rashid, team member for Rangpur-Dinajpur region; district Jamaat chief and Jamaat-nominated candidate for Nilphamari-1 (Domar-Dimla) constituency Principal Abdus Sattar; District Secretary Maulana Antajul Islam; Jamaat candidate for Nilphamari-4 (Kishoreganj-Syedpur) constituency Hafiz Maulana Abdul Muntakim; district Nayeb-E-Ameer Dr Khairul Anam; upazila Nayeb-E-Ameer Akhtaruzzaman Badol; Upazila Labour Welfare Federation President Monjurul Islam Ratan; Assistant Secretary Rabiul Islam; Shibbir Ahmed; Maulana Zahidul Islam; Maulana Afzalul Haque and others.
Under the initiative, 90 tornado-affected families received one bundle of corrugated tin each.
