Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman on Sunday criticized the interim government for failing to take a firm stance against corruption.

Speaking at a press briefing at TIB’s Dhaka office on the organization’s recommendations for political party manifestos ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election, he said, “The interim government had the opportunity to take a much stronger position against corruption since 5 August, but it cannot be denied that they may have failed to do so.”

Dr. Iftekharuzzaman noted that TIB is still analyzing comparative data and does not yet have figures to confirm whether corruption has increased or decreased since the interim government took office.

However, he emphasized that corrupt practices have persisted.

“We have seen instances since the afternoon of 5 August where certain individuals have abused political power and governance space, engaging in corruption ranging from partisan influence to illegal occupation and extortion,” he said.

“Corruption has also been reported across various government departments,” he added.
