BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has urged taking firm measures to rein in corruption, saying it must be controlled at any cost to protect the country’s future.
Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled 'Plan to Rebuild the Nation' on Sunday, December 7, he stressed that improving law and order and tackling corruption should be top priorities if BNP forms the next government.
He said only BNP has the political will and track record to curb corruption, claiming that his party had addressed the issue during its previous terms and could do so again.
Recalling country’s past crises, Tarique said BNP has historically helped guide the country out of difficult periods.
He emphasised that millions sacrificed their lives for independence, and now the nation must work together to rebuild with unity and shared responsibility.
Tarique accused an unnamed political party of spreading propaganda against BNP, similar to the tactics once used by autocratic rulers.
He noted that two senior leaders of that party — both former ministers under BNP governments — had placed their trust in Khaleda Zia because of her firm position against corruption.
The BNP leader called on citizens to unite, warning that the country is heading toward a period of severe challenges.
He alleged that disorder prevails across various sectors and said strong leadership backed by a clear plan is essential for the nation’s stability.
Commenting on those who claim they will offer heaven or hell to supporters, Tarique said such rhetoric is misguided, adding that only God has the authority to decide people’s fate in the afterlife.
