Four people, including a mother, her young son, and the child’s grandmother, were killed in a road accident on the Faridpur-Barishal highway at Bhanga upazila in Faridpur district.
The accident took place around 11:45 AM on Friday (5 December), confirmed Mohammad Helal Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhanga Highway Police Station.
The victims were identified as Rimu Begum, her three-year-old son Raihan and his grandmother Nurunnahar Begum. Another elderly man also died in the crash whose identity is yet to be found, said the OC.
Upon receiving information, local police, highway police and fire service personnel conducted a rescue operation at the scene. Four injured passengers were taken to Bhanga Health Complex and Faridpur Medical College Hospital for treatment. Police have seized the bus involved, belonging to Madina Paribahan.
According to police and local sources, the child Raihan had been unwell, prompting his mother and grandmother to bring him to Bhanga for treatment earlier in the morning.
After completing the checkup, they hired an autorickshaw from Bhanga Dakshinpara bus stand along with other passengers to return to their home in Purba Sardardi.
When the autorickshaw reached the railway crossing, a speeding Madina Paribahan bus coming from the opposite direction rammed into it, killing the child, his mother and grandmother on the spot. Another passenger of the autorickshaw also died instantly.
The OC also said that efforts are underway to identify the fourth deceased passenger.
