Student unions from four major public universities (DUCSU, RUCSU, CUCSU, JUCSU) have demanded the immediate inclusion of 13 meritorious candidates who were excluded from the 17th Bangladesh Judicial Service (BJS) recruitment gazette through police verification without specific reasons.
Joint statement from Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU), Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU), and Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) expressed deep concern over the exclusion of candidates who had cleared all merit-based selection stages.
Out of 102 finally recommended candidates, these 13 students from seven universities were dropped from the gazette despite securing commission recommendations through rigorous preparation and competition.
Student bodies argue that excluding qualified candidates without evidence of criminal offences violates constitutional principles and good governance standards. They particularly criticised the practice of denying employment based solely on familial or ancestral political identity, describing it as inconsistent with constitutional values even after the July Revolution.
"Students succeed in job examinations through tireless effort, merit and following proper procedures," the joint statement emphasised. The unions called upon the Ministry of Law, Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission and Bangladesh Public Service Commission to publish a revised gazette if no criminal evidence exists against the excluded candidates.
The statement outlined specific demands: establishing merit and qualifications as sole recruitment criteria, stopping unnecessary harassment through police verification, providing specific reasons for exclusions and allowing candidates to respond to allegations before final decisions.
Joint statement was signed by the general secretaries of four major university student unions. S. M. Forhad represented Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), while Salahuddin Ammar signed on behalf of Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU). Saeed Bin Habib added his signature as General Secretary of Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) and Md. Mazharul Islam represented Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU).
These four leaders collectively voiced their concerns about the exclusion of meritorious candidates from the judicial service recruitment process.
