SREEPUR , GAZIPUR, Dec 3: Encroachment on government land along Banar River and Bormi Bazar in Gazipur's Sreepur  Upazila has sparked concern, with multi-storey buildings mushrooming illegally under the nose of the administration.

According to land office records, nearly seven acres of government land are attached to Bormi Bazar, in addition to the riverbank. Construction of permanent structures on river land is prohibited by law, and government bazar plots are meant only for temporary shops under annual lease.

Local residents said the bazar is now facing an existential crisis as influential quarters continue to occupy land. At least 20 unauthorised multi-storey buildings have been erected along both sides of the river, while more than 50 permanent structures have sprung up on bazar land, squeezing the century-old marketplace. Despite repeated complaints, administrative action has remained limited.

"Banar River is our lifeline, and Bormi Bazar is part of our heritage. Yet both are being grabbed before our eyes. Government property worth hundreds of crores is being lost to illegal occupation," said Hafiza Akter, a student of Bormi College.

Bangladesh River Foundation Chairman Monir Hossain said, "No construction is allowed within 10 metres of riverbanks. But in Bormi, the law seems meaningless. Multi-storey buildings have been built through irregularities and corruption. Immediate eviction is essential to save the river."

Bormi Union Land Officer Deluara Begum admitted that notices had been served earlier against one encroacher, but said many influential individuals were involved.

"There is no legal provision for permanent structures on river or bazar land. All are illegal. A complete list of encroachers is yet to be prepared," she added.

Sreepur Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sayedul Islam said, "All encroachers whether on river or bazar land will be identified and listed. Eviction drives will then be carried out in phases."
