Students of seven government colleges in Dhaka have given the authorities until December 6 to issue the proposed ordinance for newly planned Dhaka Central University, warning of an indefinite sit-in if their demand is not met.
At a press briefing held in front of Dhaka College on Wednesday, student representative Abdur Rahman declared that if the ordinance is not issued by the deadline, students will begin a nonstop sit-in in front of Education Building starting Sunday.
He stated that the initiative to form an independent university for the seven colleges has been stagnant for a long time, creating mounting complications.
“Our sit-in will continue until the ordinance is officially issued,” he added.
Earlier in the day, students gathered on Dhaka College campus, marched in protest and later blockaded Mirpur Road for more than two hours.
They withdrew after announcing their next course of action.
Meanwhile, the government has already taken an in-principle decision to merge the seven colleges and establish “Dhaka Central University,” ending their affiliation with Dhaka University.
The Education Ministry announced the decision in a press release on November 12, urging all concerned to avoid confusion or conflict fuelled by rumours or incomplete information and to ensure that academic activities remain undisturbed.
