Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested a man along with firearms and hemp from Jashore Sadar Upazila early Sunday.
The arrested was identified as Liton Gazi, 38, a resident of Madhugram in the upazila.
According to sources, a DB team led by Additional Superintendent of Police Md Abul Bashar conducted a raid in Madhugram village at around 1:45 AM and recovered firearms concealed in a specially designed box bed in Gazi’s bedroom.
Police recovered five foreign-made pistols, 10 pistol magazines, 50 rounds of bullets and 4.5 kilograms of hemp from his possession.
During initial interrogation, Liton confessed to smuggling arms from India, which were intended to be transported to Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar.
Jashore Superintendent of Police (SP) Syed Rafiqul Islam revealed the incident at a press briefing on Sunday afternoon and said that Liton was accused in three drug-related cases.
District DB officer-in-charge (OC) Md Manjurul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed the incident and said that a new case has been filed under the Arms Act and Narcotics Control Act.
