A global campaign styled "16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence" through a participatory event in the capital has called for increased budgetary allocation to contain it.
Held at the Nari Unnayan Shakti (NUS) Training Center in Banasree in the capital on Tuesday, the campaign spans from November 25 to December 10 to raise awareness and strengthen collective action to prevent all forms of violence against women.
This year's inauguration was organized by Nari Unnayan Shakti (NUS) with support from the Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum (BSAF), Forum for Culture and Human Development (FCHD), and Young Women for Development Rights and Climate (YWDRC).
Dr. Afroja Parvin, Executive Director of NUS, delivered the keynote speech at the event. She highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts by communities, government agencies, and civil society to eliminate violence against women and girls. She stated, "Violence against women is not only a women's issue; it is a social problem that requires immediate and consistent action. Given the current context, it is essential for the Government of Bangladesh to double the national budget allocated for preventing violence against women."
Shahida Wahab, Chairperson of FCHD, emphasized the need for cultural transformation to prevent gender-based violence. She noted that awareness, education, and women's empowerment are the three key elements necessary for building a society free from discrimination and violence.
Speaking on behalf of BSAF, Dr. Sultan Mohammad Razzak discussed the interconnectedness of women's rights and the protection of adolescents and children. He explained that violence against adolescent girls has long-term negative impacts on both families and society.
Representing YWDRC, officer Selina Khatun spoke about the vulnerabilities faced by young women amid social and climate-related crises. She called for greater youth involvement and climate-sensitive policies to prevent violence against women.
At the end of the program, participants collectively pledged to work together toward building a violence-free society. A discussion session was later held with participants from various sectors.
