Thousands of spectators thronged the banks of the Dhala Bridge in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram district to witness the traditional boat race.

Dhala Bridge Cooperative Society Limited organised the five-day event, which kicked off on Monday (November 24) on the western bank of the Dhala Bridge in Sonaikazi area of Shimulbari union in the upazila.

On a visit on Thursday, it was seen that large crowds from nearby villages and distant areas have been flocking to the riverbank to watch the races.

The boat race competition features six large boats vying for top honours. The prizes include a buffalo for the first place, a cow for the second, and a goat for the third. The event aims to preserve the rich cultural heritage of rural Bengal.

Local students, Soheli and Miraj Hossain, expressed their excitement, saying, “It is wonderful to have a boat race in our area. Being so close to home, we enjoy every moment of the event.”

Rubel Islam, a resident of Balarhat area, who recently returned from Dhaka, said, “After a long time, seeing the traditional boat race in my village is very enjoyable. Families are watching peacefully, and the atmosphere is lively yet calm.”

Phulbari Police Station officer-in-charge Shawkat Ali Sarkar said that the police deployed special patrols to ensure law and order during the event, as large crowds gathered along the Dhala Bridge.

“Our priority is to maintain smooth traffic and ensure a safe, peaceful environment for everyone enjoying the races,” he added.

The event continues tomorrow, promising more thrilling competitions and festive celebrations for residents and visitors alike.
