A Dhaka University (DU) student died after committing suicide over a rare bone disease at Mirpur upazila in Kushtia district early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Moushumi Khatun alias Sumi, a 2018-19 session student from the Department of Sanskrit, who was found hanging in her residence.
According to sources, Sumi had been battling fibrous dysplasia, a rare bone disorder that causes severe chronic pain and causes normal bone tissue to be replaced with fibrous material, leading to bone weakness, deformity and persistent pain. She underwent multiple surgeries but found no lasting relief.
Classmates described Sumi as someone who fought her illness alone whilst trying to maintain normal student life. Years of intense pain, limited mobility and physical weakness reportedly left her mentally exhausted. Though she attempted to continue her studies, they believe she ultimately could not endure the suffering.
Her maternal aunt, Mosammat Kanconi, said Sumi's parents discovered her body early Monday morning before Fajr prayer. They cut down the rope and later reported the incident.
Dhaka University (DU)'s Sanskrit Department Chairman Professor Dr Asim Sarkar expressed grief and said that Sumi was bright and talented and they still can’t accept her loss.
'The whole department is in mourning,' added Dr Sarker, hoping no other student faces such a tragedy.
Confirming the incident, Kushtia's Mirpur Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Mominul Islam said that the case has been closed following family’s consent and the body was buried after funeral prayers on Monday afternoon.
