Elderly woman dies after house catches fire in Chandpur

A 90-year-old woman died after being trapped in a fire that engulfed her home in Chandpur's Matlab upazila.

The incident occurred early Monday at Gobindapur village under Matlab Dakshin Upazila.

The victim was Jeora Khatun of that village. Jeora Khatun had been living alone, as her two sons and daughter reside elsewhere for work and family reasons. Local resident and schoolteacher Abdur Sattar said she had gone to bed around 10 pm on Saturday after dinner.

The blaze broke out suddenly in the early hours of Sunday, and despite efforts by neighbours, she could not be rescued in time. Initial reports suggest the fire was triggered by an electrical short circuit and spread rapidly.

Officer-in-Charge Saleh Ahmed of Matlab South Police Station said officers visited the scene, though no formal complaint has been filed.
