Clash over land dispute leaves 15 injured in Cumilla

At least 15 people, including women and children, were injured in a clash between two rival groups over land dispute at Mugarchar village of Meghna upazila in Cumilla.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon between supporters of Shanti Mia and Chan Badsha, also resulted in damage to five houses and looting.

The injured have been identified as Shanti Mia, 55, Morsheda Begum, 55, Jannat, 8, Rina Akter, 25, Bashinur Begum, 60, Iman Ali, 70, Jahangir, 45, Khuki Akter, 22, Mamun Mia, 28; Rafiqul Islam, 50, and Zahir Uddin, 35.

According to local residents and police, the clash sparked panic across the village. Some of the injured sought immediate medical attention and moved to safer locations to avoid arrest. The groups reportedly attacked each other with sticks, crowbars, and homemade weapons. Two houses each belonging to Shanti Mia and Chan Badsha, and one belonging to Iman Ali, were damaged, with looting reported at Shanti Mia’s house.

The injured were taken to Meghna Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Those affected include Morsheda Begum, who sustained serious injuries, was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while others received treatment locally.

Meghna Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Jalil said that the clash stemmed from a previous lawsuit between the two groups. SI Mashiur Rahman added that the law-and-order situation is now under control, though three of the injured remain in serious condition.
