Transport federation ensures vehicle operations amid lockdown

The Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation has announced that all types of vehicles will continue to operate during the nationwide lockdown called by the Awami League on Monday.

Humayun Kabir Khan, acting general secretary of the federation, said this at a press conference in Motijheel, Dhaka, on Sunday.

The lockdown was called in protest of the verdict against three accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in the international crimes tribunal case related to crimes against humanity during the July uprising.

Humayun Kabir Khan stated that transport owners and workers are ensuring the country’s communication system remains functional. Any unexpected incidents will be prevented. He added that administrative officials are working tirelessly to maintain law and order and keep the country’s activities running smoothly.

He further said that the Awami League’s lockdown aims to disrupt the work of the interim government preparing for the upcoming elections. The federation condemned such activities and sabotage, and demanded appropriate compensation from the government for affected workers and transport owners.

The federation also noted that during the Awami League’s “Dhaka Lockdown” program last Thursday, nearly 20 vehicles were set on fire across the country. In Mymensingh, a bus was torched and the driver, Julhas, was killed. In protest, transport workers held rallies nationwide.
