A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was hacked to death allegedly by miscreants over establishing supremacy at Pashchim Latifpur village of sadar upazila in Laxmipur on Saturday night.
The deceased, Abul Kalam Zahir, 50, was the General Secretary of Ward No- 4 BNP under Chandraganj union in the upazila.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of assailants intercepted Zahir near Mostafa’s shop in the area and hacked him with sharp weapon around 8:30 PM, leaving him dead on the spot.
The miscreants, at on point, managed to flee the scene leaving him under the pool of blood.
Being informed, a team of police rushed to the scene to look into the matter, said Chandraganj police station officer-in-charge Fayzul Azim.
The body will be sent to Lakshmipur General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination through legal process, the OC said, adding that he might have been killed by his rivals over a dispute related to drugs.
“We are investigating the motive and identifying the perpetrators through forensic evidence and witness statements,” he said.
