Attorney General (AG) Md Asaduzzaman Ripon on Friday issued a stern warning that any activity, programme, or political mobilisation carried out in the name of the Awami League (AL) will be treated as unlawful, describing the party as a “banned entity” under the current political framework.

Speaking to reporters at a discussion and cultural programme in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah—held to commemorate the birth and death anniversary of eminent national poet Golam Mostofa—the attorney general reiterated that the state would not hesitate to act against attempts to revive or operate under the banner of the former ruling party.

“As the Awami League is now a banned entity, any activity conducted in its name will be considered illegal,” he said. “The government and law enforcement agencies will take lawful action against any anarchic activities linked to the AL, especially concerning the verdicts in genocide cases.”

Asaduzzaman drew historical parallels between past national turning points and Bangladesh’s current political transition. He said the forces that emerged victorious during the July uprising now hold the responsibility to guide the nation’s direction—including decisions on future referendums and constitutional matters.

“The victorious forces of the July uprising will determine the outcome of upcoming referendums and shape Bangladesh’s future. Just as the triumphant forces of the 1971 Liberation War framed the 1972 Constitution, and the 1990 mass movement restored democracy, today’s movement will define the next era,” he stated.

His comments signal the government’s intent to firmly regulate political activities linked to groups deemed unlawful or disruptive, particularly amid ongoing legal and political proceedings over historical atrocities.

Asaduzzaman also cautioned that any attempt to incite instability following the genocide case verdicts would be met with decisive legal countermeasures.

“These cases carry deep national significance. Any attempt by banned entities or their supporters to create unrest around the verdicts will be confronted within the bounds of law,” he said.

Turning to the programme’s central theme, the attorney general reflected on the lasting cultural influence of poet Golam Mostofa, whose works he said continue to resonate with themes of spiritual consciousness, social struggle, and the lived experiences of Bengali Muslims.

“Golam Mostofa’s writings mirror the identity, aspirations, and sacrifices of the Muslim society of Bengal. Studying his works strengthens our values, our sense of justice, and the heritage that defines us as a nation,” he noted.

Several distinguished personalities were honoured at the event, including former lawmaker Mia Mosharraf Hossain and renowned artist Mostofa Monowar, the poet’s son.
