A groundbreaking 10-day cartoon festival titled "Cartoons for Equality" was recently held at the National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. Dedicated to challenging and preventing violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Bangladesh, the event brought together artists, activists, and audiences under one powerful message - using creativity to inspire social change.

Organised by Cartoon People, Bonhishikha - Unlearn Gender, and Maa Er Doa Studio, in partnership with UN Women Bangladesh and supported by the Government of Canada, the festival marked a pioneering step in merging art, activism, and social dialogue. It aimed to reshape narratives around gender equality and promote awareness through the universal language of cartoons.

By choosing cartoons as the medium of advocacy, the organisers encouraged artists to use satire, humour, and illustration to confront complex social realities. The goal was not only to entertain but also to challenge gender stereotypes, question harmful norms, and inspire empathy and reflection among viewers of all ages.

The festival featured over 200 selected artworks created by both established and emerging cartoonists from across the country. But Cartoons for Equality was more than just an exhibition it was a creative movement. The event included murals, interactive installations, short animations, video games, and live performances, turning the gallery into an immersive and thought-provoking space where art met activism.

Each piece of art told a powerful story. Through lines, colors, and visual wit, the cartoons portrayed the many faces of discrimination and violence that women and girls experience every day - at home, in schools, at workplaces, on the streets, and even online. Some artworks depicted the silent struggles of victims, while others boldly envisioned a world free from fear and prejudice.

Using humour and irony as tools, the artists exposed deep-rooted gender biases that often go unnoticed in daily life. The visual narratives encouraged audiences to rethink attitudes toward women and to imagine a more inclusive, respectful, and equal society.

The interactive installations and live performances added depth to the message, allowing participants to engage directly with the theme. Visitors could share their thoughts, express solidarity, and reflect on their roles in building a safer, more equal world.

By bridging creativity and consciousness, Cartoons for Equality proved that art can be a powerful force for advocacy and transformation. The festival successfully turned visual storytelling into a collective call for justice - demonstrating that even a simple cartoon can ignite serious conversations about gender, power, and equality.

As the event concluded, one message resonated clearly among visitors and artists alike: change begins with awareness, and awareness can begin with art. Through imagination and courage, Cartoons for Equality invited everyone to envision a Bangladesh where women and girls can live with dignity, freedom, and hope.
