Police have conducted a raid at the residence of former Education Minister Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel in Chattogram, detaining seven individuals on Wednesday afternoon (November 12).

The operation, brought out at Chashma Hill area of Chattogram's Panchlaish, began around 3:30 PM at the house located near the city’s No. 2 Gate area, according to police sources.

Nowfel, who served as the state minister for education during the ousted Awami League government, is the eldest son of late A.B.M. Mohiuddin Chowdhury, former Chattogram City Corporation mayor and president of the party’s city unit.

Law enforcement officials said the raid followed intelligence reports suggesting that several members of banned Chhatra League and Jubo League were staying at the property. Acting on the tip-off, a police team from Panchlaish Police Station carried out the operation and detained seven suspects for questioning.

Police sources also revealed that a restaurant owned by the late Mohiuddin Chowdhury’s family, which had been closed since the fall of the previous government, was previously managed by its staff through online food delivery.

With Nowfel and his family reportedly absconding, the restaurant’s workers had been guarding the property and allegedly using it as a base for online orders and food deliveries.

Panchlaish Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Solaiman told reporters that the detainees are being interrogated to verify their identities and affiliations.

“We received information that members of banned political groups were hiding in the house. Seven people have been detained, and legal action will follow upon completion of verification and investigation,” he said.

Police have not disclosed the names of the detainees, and the investigation into their alleged links to banned political organizations is ongoing.
