The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has restructured the number of seats across 37 government medical colleges, reducing the total by 280 to set a new figure of 5,100 seats for the upcoming academic session.
The decision was communicated in an official letter signed by Sanjeeb Das, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Medical Education-1 Wing under the Health Services Division, and sent to Professor Dr Md Nazmul Hossain, Director General of the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME), on Monday.
According to the letter, the revision follows a meeting held on October 30, chaired by the Adviser to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, where seat distribution for MBBS courses was reviewed.
Among the changes, 355 seats were cut from 14 medical colleges, including Dhaka Medical College, while three colleges saw an increase. The country's eight oldest medical colleges-Dhaka, Chattogram, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Sylhet MAG Osmani, Barishal Sher-e-Bangla, Sir Salimullah (Dhaka), and Rangpur-each lost 25 seats, reducing their capacity from 250 to 225. Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College lost five seats, from 230 to 225.
