A deadly
explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort claimed eight lives and left six injured
on Monday evening, triggering a massive emergency response and raising
alarms over security in one of the city’s busiest tourist zones.
The
blast occurred around 7:45 PM near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort metro
station, when a high-intensity explosion ripped through a vehicle,
igniting fires in at least three nearby vehicles and causing widespread
damage.
All victims were rushed to Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan
(LNJP) Hospital, where the injured are receiving treatment. The
condition of several remains critical.
The Delhi Fire Service
deployed nearly 20 fire engines to contain the blaze, which took over an
hour to fully extinguish. Police swiftly cordoned off the area,
shutting down roads in Chandni Chowk and suspending metro services
temporarily.
The cause of the blast remains unclear. Forensic
experts, bomb disposal squads, and crime scene analysts have been
deployed to examine debris and review CCTV footage from the area.
Delhi
Police have not yet confirmed whether the explosion was accidental or
intentional. No group has claimed responsibility, but authorities are
treating it as a potential security threat.
Shops and footpaths near the fort were packed with evening visitors when the blast struck.
“I’ve
never heard such a loud explosion,” said Sunita Devi, a vendor nearby.
“People started screaming. Smoke rose 50 feet into the air.”
Another witness reported seeing shattered glass, burning vehicles, and panicked crowds fleeing in all directions.
The
Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and symbol of India’s
independence, is located in densely populated Old Delhi and draws
thousands daily. Attacks here have occurred in the past, making it a
high-security concern.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi
Chief Minister Atishi expressed shock and offered condolences. Both
called for a swift, transparent investigation.
“This is a moment of sorrow,” said CM Atishi. “Our priority is saving lives and uncovering the truth behind this tragedy.”
