Dhaka-Islamabad defense ties deepen

Bangladesh's relations with its once-mortal enemy, Pakistan, particularly in the area of defense, have deepened significantly in recent times, especially after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024.

Evidently, Pakistan's Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, is on a three-day visit to Dhaka, marking another step forward in the growing camaraderie between the two countries. Additionally, the Pakistan Navy ship PNS SAIF is currently in Chattogram on a goodwill visit.

On the other hand, not long ago, a delegation of senior Bangladeshi military officers visited Pakistan and was received by the Pakistani Army Chief, General Asim Munir. The Bangladesh Navy also participated in Pakistan's annual multilateral naval exercise.

All this suggests more than ceremonial exchanges. It reflects a gradual but meaningful rebuilding of ties between the two South Asian nations once bitterly divided by history. Admiral Ashraf's visit follows a series of diplomatic and defense engagements that underscore the growing warmth in bilateral relations.

The rekindling of relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan has taken a decisive turn under the interim leadership of Dr. Muhammad Yunus as Bangladesh has reshaped its foreign policy, prioritizing pragmatic engagement over historical hostility.

The meeting between Dr Yunus and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the D-8 Summit in Cairo last December laid the groundwork for renewed cooperation. That meeting marked the first high-level contact in years and set in motion a series of subsequent exchanges at political, military and economic levels.

After more than half a century of mistrust, tangible progress is now visible. Direct trade between the two countries has resumed, with Bangladesh importing rice from Pakistan and private cargo shipments arriving at Chittagong for the first time since 1971.

Moreover, the Joint Economic Commission (JEC) between Bangladesh and Pakistan was held in Dhaka recently, the first such meeting in nearly two decades. Both sides agreed to bolster cooperation in trade, connectivity, investment, agriculture, energy, and education. Particularly promising are plans to establish direct shipping links, expand air routes and enhance port utilization to promote cost-effective regional trade.

However, the path toward full reconciliation is neither simple nor complete. The unresolved issue of Pakistan's formal apology for the atrocities committed during the 1971 Liberation War remains a moral and emotional hurdle. While the interim government in Dhaka appears to have focused on looking ahead, historical wounds cannot be healed without acknowledgment.

Despite the limited trade volume, still under $1 billion annually, the potential for economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries is immense. Both nations also share common challenges, including climate vulnerability, energy insecurity and the need for regional stability.

As Admiral Ashraf's visit symbolizes, Bangladesh and Pakistan have begun to turn a new page in their complex relationship. The coming years will test whether this rapprochement can mature into a durable partnership. The opportunity is there and both nations must seize it wisely.
