Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner M Nazmul Karim Khan, who was earlier withdrawn from his post, has now been placed under temporary suspension.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification on Monday through its Police-1 Branch, ordering the suspension in the public interest.
The order stated that “as it is necessary and appropriate in the public interest to keep Md Nazmul Karim Khan, Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (recently withdrawn to Police Headquarters), away from government service, he is hereby temporarily suspended under the provisions of the Government Service Act.”
During the suspension period, Nazmul Karim will remain attached to the Home Ministry and receive subsistence allowance as per government rules.
Nazmul Karim was appointed GMP Commissioner on November 11 last year and became the President of the Bangladesh Police Service Association on May 1 this year.
On September 1, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam issued an order instructing him to hand over his duties to the next senior officer and report to the Police Headquarters in Dhaka.
Sources said crime rates, including incidents of mugging, extortion, abduction, rape, and murder, had risen significantly in several areas under GMP jurisdiction during his tenure, raising serious concerns about law and order in Gazipur.
