4 cousins drown in Meherpur beel

Four cousins died after drowning in a beel while collecting water lilies at Sadar upazila in Meherpur district on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Fatema, 14, Afia, 10, Alsia, 10 and Meem, 14, daughters of two brothers – Majibor Rahman and Shaharul Islam of Rajnagar village in the upazila.

According to locals, the quartet went to Masuribhaja beel to collect water lilies but didn’t return home after a long time.

Later, family members began searching for them and found their bodies floating on the beel.

Being informed, local fire service officials rushed to the spot and recovered their bodies.

Meherpur police station officer-in-charge Mesbahuddin confirmed the incident.
