At least 20 individuals injured in a clash that broke out on Sunday between two factions of BNP over party’s nomination in Mymensingh-3 (Gouripur) constituency.

The confrontation occurred at Patbazar area of Gouripur upazila in Mymensingh district.

Gouripur Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Devashish Karmakar said sporadic clashes are still ongoing, but army and police forces are on the ground to control the situation.

According to party sources, BNP National Executive Committee member Engineer M Iqbal Hossain received party nomination for the constituency, angering supporters of Ahmed Tayebur Rahman Hiron, who was overlooked.

On Sunday, Hiron’s supporters reportedly attacked party workers attending Iqbal Hossain’s rally on National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

In retaliation, Iqbal’s supporters attacked a stage set up for Hiron’s women’s rally, causing extensive damage and injuries.

The identities of those injured have not yet been confirmed.

Iqbal Hossain confirmed the incident, accusing the opposing faction of carrying out attacks against his supporters and demanding strict action from the party and authorities.

Hiron’s supporters claimed that Iqbal’s faction caused extensive damage to their rally stage, leaving many members injured.

Gouripur Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Didarul Islam said that the situation has largely calmed down, but joint forces remain on alert to prevent further unrest.
