Ease concerns over new textbooks

Dear Sir,

For years, the government's 'Book Festival' has brought smiles to millions of students by distributing free textbooks on the first day of every academic year. However, concerns have recently emerged over delays in printing and distribution. With only two months left before the new school year, printing for nearly 210 million secondary-level textbooks has yet to begin. Frequent tender complications, corruption, and mismanagement have repeatedly caused delays, disrupting curriculum implementation and diminishing students' enthusiasm.

The government plans to print about 310 million books for 2025, 85 million for primary and 225 million for secondary levels but the process already lags behind. Authorities must ensure transparent tendering and close monitoring to prevent irregularities. The upcoming national election may further pressure printing presses, as many may prioritize political materials over textbooks for higher profit. Past experiences show this can lead to black market sales of free books.

To avoid such issues, printing responsibilities should be allocated based on each press's real capacity, ensuring timely and quality production. The government must also continue supporting local presses to sustain employment and self-reliance. Above all, efficient coordination among relevant ministries is vital to ensure that students start the new year with joy, not uncertainty.
