BNP Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said on Thursday that the Interim Government cannot resign respectfully without elected representatives, so there is no alternative to holding elections.
"Elections must take place," he said.
Speaking at a discussion titled "Re-Imagining Bangladesh's Political Future," organised by the Dhaka Forum Initiative he said, "Political parties have already announced their candidates, but some people are trying to delay or stop the elections in the name of proportional representation (PR), but it is not being explained properly."
Khandaker Mosharraf said that besides supporting the interim government, it was also decided that the government would hand over power to elected representatives through elections as soon as possible.
He said the interim government has already told the media that they will do this.
"Right now, the most important thing in politics is the election," he said.
"There is no way to avoid the election and the best time for it is next February. After that, Ramadan will start," he added.
Mosharraf said some people are trying to turn a small issue into a big one to create a crisis about the election. To solve this, he said the people must unite and make the election successful.
He also said that if elected representatives go to parliament and form the government, then the current government can resign with dignity.
"There is no alternative except elections. Whether it is today or tomorrow, elections must be held," he said.
The meeting also discussed BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman's book "Tareque Rahman Politics and Policies in Contemporary Bangladesh" and a recent interview.
The discussion focused on democratic governance, leadership ideas, and policy issues in Bangladesh.
Khandaker Mosharraf said that if proportional representation (PR) is used, there might come a time when forming a government becomes impossible in Bangladesh.
