The Trump administration has canceled nearly 80,000 non-immigrant visas since President Donald Trump assumed office on January 20 this year, according to a senior State Department official.
The cancellations were linked to various offenses, including driving under the influence, assault, and theft. Approximately 16,000 visas were revoked for DUI-related incidents, 12,000 for assault, and 8,000 for theft cases, together accounting for nearly half of all cancellations this year.
The State Department has also tightened visa issuance, expanding social media checks and security verifications. In August, over 6,000 student visas were canceled due to legal violations or overstaying, with some revoked over alleged support for terrorism.
Officials noted that expressing political opinions, such as supporting Palestine or criticizing Israeli actions in Gaza, has also led to visa cancellations or deportations for students and green card holders, citing threats to US foreign policy.
