BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the Advisory Council of working in a biased manner and called for urgent action on pending political reforms.
He made the remarks on Thursday while speaking as the chief guest at a memorial event for former minister Tariqul Islam at Jashore Town Hall.
He said that while the council has given political parties just seven days to respond, political matters cannot be treated lightly.
He stressed that consensus-based decisions from the Commission should be implemented immediately, while unresolved issues should be addressed in the next parliament.
Addressing the advisors, he said, “We gained independence through immense sacrifice. After the 1990 movement, we had the opportunity to return to democracy. Please do not create confusion or attempt to destabilize the country.”
He warned that underestimating BNP would be a mistake, emphasizing that the party is not one to be side-lined.
“If we take to the streets, political matters will take a different turn,” he said.
Fakhrul reiterated that referendum will be held along with national elections, not before and urged the council to act promptly on agreed reforms, while pending issues should be finalized in parliament.
“Announce the schedule quickly and hold the elections or you will be held accountable by the people,” he added.
Paying tribute to late Tariqul Islam, Fakhrul described him as a patriotic leader who struggled for the people throughout his life, from his student activism to enduring imprisonment and persecution.
“Leaders like Tariqul Islam do not come often. His biography should be written so that future generations can learn from his life,” he said.
The event was presided over by Syed Saberul Haq Sabur, Jashore district BNP president and attended by senior BNP leaders including Amalendu Das Apu, Mofiqul Hasan Tripti, Engineer T.S. Ayub, Sabira Najmul Munni and Kazi Rawnakul Islam Shraban.
