Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossain has warned that political forces resisting country’s ongoing reform movement will be held accountable to both the people and history, emphasizing that the nation’s future depends on the full realization of the July Charter.
“Just as the Awami League carried the responsibility for post-1972 failures, today’s opponents of reform will also bear history’s verdict,” Akhter said on Tuesday while speaking at a discussion titled “The Inevitable Consequences of Post-Liberation State-Building Failures: November 1975” held at the party’s central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka.
He urged all political parties to transcend partisan divides and commit collectively to rebuilding Bangladesh on democratic and constitutional foundations. “Reform is not about any single party—it’s about safeguarding the Republic’s future,” he stated.
Akhter described the July Charter as a “blueprint for national renewal,” stressing that its success hinges on transparent lawmaking, a credible referendum, and empowering the next parliament to institutionalize constitutional reforms. “Only then can we fulfill the democratic promises of the Liberation War,” he said.
Criticizing the 1972 Constitution for concentrating power in one individual, Akhter argued that Bangladesh’s political system has long restricted freedom of thought and suppressed parliamentary representation. “Article 70 turned politics into a monopoly of party command,” he observed.
He added that the 2024 uprising was not merely about removing a regime but about establishing a new democratic order. “The people of Bangladesh will vote ‘yes’ in the referendum for reform—they fought for accountability, justice, and participation,” he said.
Reaffirming the NCP’s mission, Akhter vowed to strengthen national institutions, safeguard judicial independence, protect media freedom, and replace muscle-based politics with one driven by policy and principle. “We cannot afford to repeat the failures of 1972 and 1990. This time, reform must be completed,” he asserted.
Akhter also expressed gratitude to party leaders and activists for their efforts following the NCP’s official registration with the Election Commission. “Many doubted our registration and questioned public support, but we have proven that the people stand with the National Citizen Party. With their confidence, NCP will achieve the impossible in the coming election,” he said.
The event was attended by NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari and other senior central leaders.
