A Dhaka court on Tuesday denied the bail petition of Barjis Shabnam Barsha, one of the accused in the murder case of Jagannath University (JnU) student and Chhatra Dal leader Jobayed Hossain.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court rejected the bail plea and ordered that she be sent to jail, plaintiff's lawyer Estiyak Hossain Zipu confirmed.
The defence counsel claimed Barsha was innocent and sought bail for her. But we argued that Barsha was one of the key planners behind Jobayed's murder. Later, the court rejected her bail plea and sent her to jail, Zipu said.

Earlier, on 19 October, Jobayed, a postgraduate student of the Statistics Department (2019-20 session) at JnU and member of University unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, was stabbed to death on the staircase of a house in Old Dhaka's Armanitola area, where he had gone to give tuition.

On 21 October, Jobayed's brother Enayet Hossain Saikat filed a case with Bangshal Police Station against Jobayed's student Barsha, her boyfriend Mahir Rahman, and Fardeen Ahmed Aylan. The accused later gave confessional statements in court the same day.

According to police, the murder stemmed from a love triangle. Barsha had previously been in a relationship with Mahir but later became involved with Jobayed. Subsequently, Barsha told Mahir that she no longer liked Jobayed, after which the couple orchestrated the murder on 25 September.
